What is a Silk Press?

A silk press is a hair-straightening process that works especially well on women with naturally curly, coarse, or bristly hair. It’s called a silk press because of the silky appearance of the hair once it's finished. It starts with a shampooing that uses a protein-rich, hydrating frizz-free shampoo. Next, we blow dry your hair and press it with a special flat iron while using brushes and other tools.

How Does Silk Press Straightening Differ from Flat Iron Straightening?

While a silk press does straighten hair like a flat iron straightening, there are some important differences between the two.

  • First, a flat iron straightening uses a hot iron to straighten hair into various hairstyles. While the hair appears flat, it’s not silky smooth and doesn’t have the same luster.

  • Second, a flat iron straightening can typically be done on your own and can be done on almost any hair type. However, a silk press needs a specially-trained hair stylist and should only be done on 4a, 4b, or 4c type hair.

  • Third, the silk press provides a much better, smoother, and silkier appearance.

  • Fourth, a flat iron straightening must be done much more frequently to maintain the same appearance, whereas a silk press may only need to be done three or four times a year – however, this depends upon the hair type and other factors.

  • Finally, a silk press takes a special skill set. It’s not just about flattening or straightening hair. It’s about using multiple tools at the right time to get the right luster and silky-smooth finish.

The hair stylists at The Natural Hair Spa in Philadelphia have been specifically trained on how to perform a flawless silk press. They have performed countless silk presses on customers.

Are There Any Chemicals in a Silk Press?

No. A silk press is a chemical-free hair-straightening process performed by hairstyling experts at The Natural Hair Spa. No chemicals are ever used in the process. We have a preference for nutrient-rich hydrating shampoo and conditioner.

How Long Does a Silk Press Last?

Answering this question depends upon a lot of different factors. Your hair type is one consideration as some hair types have a natural affinity to lasting longer when having a silk press done. The texture and health of your hair is another consideration. Healthy, natural hair may last longer than less healthy hair. The thickness of your hair is also considered as is your age. Younger women often have fuller hair that lends itself well to having a silk press done. It’s important to understand that the frequency

of a silk press depends upon these factors and others. However, the highly-trained staff at The Natural Hair Spa in Philadelphia will always answer all your questions and will be more than happy to give you an idea of how long your silk press will last.
